Students wading in water with nets

Thanks to Emerald & Forgotten Coast Adventures, our 5th-grade students participated in an engaging, hands-on science field trip to Camp Helen. Throughout the day, students explored local ecosystems, participated in interactive experiments, and discovered the natural world in new and meaningful ways.

One highlight included wading into the water to collect marine specimens with nets. Students examined their finds—small crabs, shrimp, fish of all sizes, algae, and even egg sacs—using touch tanks and observation containers for an up-close look at coastal wildlife.

At the water quality testing station, students used test tubes, chemical indicators, and color charts to analyze samples taken directly from the area, learning how scientists assess environmental health.

A guided nature hike provided students with opportunities to use binoculars and wildlife identification pamphlets while exploring animal tracks, local birds, and native species along the trail.

Finally, at the digital microscope station, students investigated tiny organisms from Bayou water samples, identifying plankton and other microscopic life with charts and visual guides.

It was a day filled with discovery, curiosity, and outdoor learning. What an unforgettable experience for our young scientists!
